U.S. Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas will handle emergency appeals from Louisiana, Mississippi and Texas, the court announced Thursday, taking over those duties from the late Justice Antonin Scalia.
The order giving Thomas some supervisory duties over the Fifth Circuit is one more indication of how the court is adjusting to Scalia’s sudden death. In addition to handling emergency appeals and other administrative matters, circuit justices over time often develop a bond with the states in their circuits, attending their federal judicial conferences and visiting their law schools.
