As President Barack Obama prepares to travel to Cuba next month to further mend ties with the communist country, Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld is continuing to bolster its Cuba practice. The firm announced on Feb. 23 that it had hired Devry Boughner Vorwerk from agribusiness giant Cargill Inc., where she was vice president of corporate affairs. A nonlawyer, Vorwerk is chairwoman of the U.S. Agriculture Coalition for Cuba, which has been working for nearly two years to end the U.S. embargo against Cuba.

At Akin Gump, Vorwerk will be “looking for opportunities to enhance trade” between the U.S. and Cuba, she said. As a senior adviser at the firm, she will be lobbying both Cuban and American officials as the two countries work to reinvent their relationship.
