White House Counsel Neil Eggleston on Friday said President Barack Obama’s nomination of D.C. Circuit Chief Judge Merrick Garland to the U.S. Supreme Court has been an attempt to “play it straight” and put the court above Washington’s partisan politics.
Appearing at a Politico event, Eggleston, who said he thinks Garland has “a really good chance” of confirmation, responded to speculation from Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, that Senate Democrats could use a procedural tactic to override the control he and Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Kentucky, have over the process and force a floor vote on Garland.
