Clemency: Herbert Donahue, a retired Marine Corps major, has taken up the cause of seeking clemency for troops convicted of killing civilians in Iraq and Afghanistan. Recently, he found an unexpected ally in a group of University of Chicago law students who formed a group focused on helping convicted troops, called the Combat Clemency Project. Immigration: In a 5-3 decision that scrambled ideological lines, the Supreme Court ruled Thursday that immigrants can be deported for violations of state laws that don’t involve interstate commerce—a typical element in federal criminal statutes. The ruling will make it easier for the government to deport immigrants who’ve committed crimes under state law, the Wall Street Journal reports.
