Class actions alleging defects in some of the nation’s top brands of residential air conditioner units have gotten a cold reception from federal judges who have denied class certification in at least five cases in the past nine months.

More than 25 consumer class actions have been filed since 2012 alleging that five A/C manufacturers failed to disclose that defective evaporator coils caused units to leak refrigerant and that their warranties didn’t pay for all the repair costs. The suits were filed under various state consumer laws, with most against Houston’s Goodman Manufacturing Co., which makes the Goodman and Amana brands.
