Anybody can make a pretzel, and any snack company can sell a crisp. But Pretzel Crisps? They’re a thing unto themselves, Debevoise & Plimpton attorneys argued in one of their most significant intellectual property cases last year.

Two entrepreneurs had dreamed up “their best idea ever,” Debevoise partner David Bernstein said, when they flattened the standard bite-size pretzel by removing its middle more than a decade ago. It crunched like a cracker. The couple patented and trademarked the product, Pretzel Crisps.
