The U.S. Supreme Court on Tuesday agreed to hear an appeal brought by Wells Fargo and Bank of America against the city of Miami in a dispute over alleged predatory lending practices that discriminated against minorities.

Without comment, the court said it would review and consolidate the cases of Bank of America v. Miami and Wells Fargo v. Miami for hearing during the term of the court that begins Oct. 3. The cases add heft to next term’s docket, which is dominated by low-profile cases — a trend that some commentators attribute to the justices’ uncertainty over when the court will return to its complement of nine justices in the wake of Justice Antonin Scalia’s death in February.
