After 25 years on the bench, U.S. Magistrate Judge Alan Kay is retiring from the federal district court in Washington.

But he’s not leaving the work altogether. Kay said he plans to seek the magistrate judge equivalent of senior status for district judges. Known as being “recalled,” the judicial council of the D.C. Circuit would approve him to handle cases as needed in the D.C. court, and other courts where his help is needed.
