An American military veteran and security contractor is suing two officials from the Democratic Republic of the Congo he claims were responsible for illegally detaining and torturing him for more than six weeks.
Darryl Lewis was working as a security advisor for opposition leader and DRC presidential candidate Moise Katumbi in April when he and three colleagues were arrested near a political rally, according to his complaint. They were turned over to the Agence Nationale de Renseignements (ANR), a Congolese government intelligence agency, which subjected them to extreme interrogation methods, the complaint said. The ANR falsely accused Lewis — the only U.S. citizen in the group — of being an American mercenary solider attempting to overthrow the Congolese government, the complaint said.
