A divided U.S. Supreme Court on Wednesday blocked an order that allowed a Virginia transgender teenager to use his high school's restrooms that correspond with his gender identity. In Gloucester County School Board v. G.G., the high court, voting 5-3 in an unsigned opinion, imposed a stay pending the filing and disposition of a petition from the school board.

Grimm’s case is one of at least three challenges involving transgender individuals’ use of restroom facilities. A federal district court in North Carolina is hearing a challenge to that state’s HB 2 bathroom bill, and a number of states have sued the U.S. departments of Justice and Education in Texas district court over their recent guidances on the issue.
