The Federal Trade Commission and Herbalife Inc. have tapped the consulting firm Affiliated Monitors Inc. to ensure the company’s compliance with the terms of a recent $200 million settlement, deciding against large law firms that jumped into the pool of 26 applicants for the lucrative seven-year assignment.

In a court filing submitted Thursday in Los Angeles federal court, FTC attorney Janet Ammerman and Herbalife lawyer Douglas Axel said the government and the company had selected the Boston-based Affiliated Monitors “by mutual agreement.” If the two sides had failed to agree on a choice, the decision would have been left to Judge Beverly Reid O’Connell in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California.
