After a news investigation raised questions about the political fundraising efforts of Boston’s Thornton Law Firm, an election watchdog group on Wednesday lodged a formal complaint seeking a campaign finance investigation of the personal injury firm and three of its partners.

The complaint, filed with the Federal Election Commission, asked the agency to determine if Thornton violated campaign finance law by facilitating straw donations to political candidates.
