Some colleagues are calling for the resignation of University of Oregon School of Law professor Nancy Shurtz after she wore blackface to an off-campus Halloween party attended by some law faculty and students. Shurtz, who has been on the Oregon Law faculty since 1982, was put on administrative leave by the university last week as it investigated her alleged conduct.

Shurtz apologized to law students in a message Nov. 2, saying that she did not intend to offend anyone and meant to dress as the title character from the book “Black Man in a White Coat: A Doctor’s Reflections on Race and Medicine,” a memoir by Damon Tweedy highlighting the challenges of being a black doctor.
