A lawyer for former U.S. Rep. Aaron Schock slammed the government’s indictment of the Illinois politician on Thursday, calling the 24-count case’s timing politically motivated by Democrats reeling from a lost presidential election.

Schock, who is now 35 and was once the youngest member of the House, resigned from Congress in March last year following reports he was misspending campaign funds for personal travel and had received improper gifts — including the design of a red-walled Capitol Hill office that appeared to be inspired by “Downton Abbey.” Schock said he has since repaid taxpayer-funded money spent on his travels.
