It’s rare for a law student to land a prestigious Rhodes Scholarship. The age cutoff at 24 means most law students are too old to apply as they near graduation, but University of Chicago Law School third-year Joshua Pickar beat the clock by completing his undergraduate degree at George Washington University in just two years.

Earlier this month, Pickar was named one of the 32 Rhodes Scholarship recipients from the United States, and will work towards a master’s in international relations at Oxford University. We caught up with Pickar to discuss the awkward moment when he learned he won, his summer working in Big Law, and his advice for aspiring Rhodes Scholars. His answers have been edited for length.
