Eighteen days — That’s the amount of time that President Barack Obama has left to grant clemency petitions or sentence commutations for individuals sentenced for nonviolent drug offenses who have languished in federal prisons for periods far longer than they would have if sentenced today.

The fact that President Obama has already used his executive clemency powers to show mercy on more than 1,300 individuals will stand as a significant part of his legacy. However, that there are still many more eligible applicants should come as no surprise given the vast number of people who were overcharged and harshly sentenced under drug laws and policies which have since been overturned.
