Pleading the Fifth, seeking immunity, making a deal — it’s nothing particularly new in Washington, but requests to strike a bargain never fail to send shock waves through the District.

News broke Thursday that former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn’s lawyer, Covington & Burling partner Robert Kelner, requested immunity for Flynn in exchange for his testimony before the Senate Intelligence Committee. The committee is investigating possible Russian interference with the 2016 presidential election — Flynn resigned from the administration after he lied to Vice President Mike Pence about contact with the Russian ambassador. The committee appears to have denied the request for now, according to reports.
