D.C. court leaders have begun implementing a plan to streamline minor misdemeanors and traffic matters in an effort to resolve a majority of these cases at the defendant’s first court appearance.
Last week, a panel of 14 court-appointed attorneys began acting as legal advisers to indigent people arrested for traffic violations and minor misdemeanors such as public intoxication. These attorneys are responsible for looking over the defendant’s case file and giving advice on what the person should do-accept a plea or diversion offer or go to trial.
