It’s tucked into the Department of Justice budget, sitting quietly between requests for additional money to boost homeland security and immigration enforcement: $25.2 million for the government’s massive lawsuit against the tobacco industry.
To be sure, the figure is trifling compared with the Justice Department’s total 2003 budget proposal of $23.1 billion. Still, the investment marks the first significant show of support for the lawsuit since Republicans took over the White House.
