In January 2000, the District filed a novel suit against 25 firearms manufacturers and dealers in an attempt to recoup millions of dollars spent on treating gunshot victims.
The suit triggered an immediate flurry of activity, including the defendants’ motion to dismiss the case. A year’s worth of legal briefs were filed, and on April 13, 2001, D.C. Superior Court Judge Cheryl Long heard oral arguments on whether the gun suit should proceed.
