ore than ever, this Fourth of July we should celebrate America’s cultural renown, including our greatest composer-Charles Ives. What? You’ve barely heard of him? That’s OK-he wouldn’t have cared.
But . . . you’re dubious: Aren’t America’s contributions to classical music eclipsed by our gifts to jazz, blues, country, pop and, of course, good old rock ‘n’ roll? Could Ives really have been more important than Louis Armstrong, Robert Johnson, Hank Williams, George Gershwin, or Chuck Berry?
