Last Monday morning in Fairfax County Circuit Court: A plaintiff’s attorney doesn’t have the case law to support his client’s argument. Judge Henry Hudson orders a 10-minute recess so the attorney can run down to the law library and find what he needs. In the meantime, Hudson does his own research and finds controlling authority that voids the plaintiff’s position.

The Aug. 12 hearing took place during Hudson’s last full week as a state court judge. On Sept. 3, he will be sworn in as the 11th judge of the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia.
