Lugging an oversized, stuffed giraffe named Geoffrey to court may not be the most conventional or sophisticated approach to presenting a complex business case.

But it worked for attorney Michael Dockterman, partner at Chicago’s Wildman, Harrold, Allen & Dixon. In a recent contract dispute between Toys “R” Us Inc. and Amazon.com Inc., Dockterman brought the toy store’s famous giraffe into closing arguments as a prop to prove a point: that Toys “R” Us was no longer the exclusive seller of toys and baby products on Amazon.com — an alleged violation of a 10-year contract signed in 2000.
