The “complete lawyer,” in order to best serve the client, often does more than provide only “legal advice” in a narrow sense. A valuable attorney frequently provides specific guidance and recommendations concerning changes to a client’s policies and practices. The client does not lose the protection of the attorney-client privilege when an attorney offers such practical advice.
A skilled lawyer takes the time to get to know his client well, whether that client is an individual or a public or private corporate entity, so that the lawyer does not provide the client with legal advice in a context-free vacuum.
