Former Illinois Gov. James R. Thompson, a Winston & Strawnattorney who is the firm’s former chairman, testified Tuesday that certainpayments that went to four Hollinger International executives on trial inChicago should have been disclosed to the company audit committee he servedon, but weren’t.
Thompson, who was the U.S. Attorney in Chicago before he was electedgovernor, told the jury that the committee wasn’t informed of millions ofdollars in payments to former Hollinger Chairman Conrad Black and threeother former Hollinger executives that should have gone to the company.Thompson is one of the government’s witnesses in a trial that is in itsseventh week and is expected to last three to four months.
