It’s the time of the year for lateral leaps as partners collect their back-loaded pay and are free to pack up. But amid the unbridled lateral movement of recent years, one California firm has largely kept its partnership closed to outsiders.

In the past 10 years, Los Angeles-based Munger, Tolles & Olson has not had one partner-to-partner hire from another law firm. While the firm has brought in some partners from the U.S. Attorney’s Office, the 200-lawyer firm accepts lateral partners only in “exceptional circumstances,” said Mark Helm, the firm’s co-managing partner.
