For Roger Clemens, the road leading to a hot seat before the U.S. House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform began two years ago, when former Sen. George Mitchell called Kevin Ryan, the U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of California.

Mitchell had just been hired by Bud Selig, commissioner of Major League Baseball, to investigate the extent of steroid use among major league players. From the start, Mitchell wanted to establish good relations with the prosecutors in that district, who were running a criminal investigation along the same lines. So the week the investigation was announced, Charles Scheeler, Mitchell’s partner at DLA Piper and lead investigator, flew to San Francisco to meet with assistant U.S. Attorney Matthew Parrella. A few weeks later, Mitchell had breakfast with Ryan.
