A few years ago, Toyota Motor Corp. briefly had cause for celebration when it won a wrongful death jury trial in San Francisco Superior Court. Then Judge James McBride granted a new trial and slapped the automaker with $138,984 in discovery sanctions.

Now, facing a motion for terminating sanctions that would automatically find Toyota liable during the retrial, the company is hoping to bring in a new judge.
