Sharp 10-year rise in prison time for federal offenders, but alternative sentencing takes a dive

The rate at which federal offenders are being sentenced to prison time has increased by 10 percentage points in the past 10 years — from 75.4% to 85.3% since fiscal year 1997 — while the use of alternative sentences, such as probation and probation with confinement, has decreased over the same period.

Gardere and Munsch Hardt Raise Associate Salaries

Like associates at a number of other Texas firms, associates at Dallas-based Gardere Wynne Sewell and Munsch Hardt Kopf & Harr are getting raises. Under the salary scale effective April 1, compensation for a first-year associate at Gardere will be $140,000. Managing partner Stephen Good says the 278-lawyer firm is working on a new bonus schedule, which will be "in the market ranges" for other large Texas firms. Munsch Hardt is raising the base salary for its first-years to $135,000, retroactive to March 1.

Joining the firm are Laura Grossfield Birger, the former chief of the general crimes unit at the Southern District U.S. Attorney's Office, and Jennifer B. Coplan, a former counsel at Debevoise & Plimpton. The additions come at the same time as the departure of veteran executive compensation specialist Paul M. Ritter, who will head that practice at Kramer, Levin, Naftalis & Frankel.

Fried Frank Antitrust Chair Joins Cadwalader

Cadwalader, Wickersham & Taft has recruited the chair of the antitrust practice at Fried, Frank, Harris, Shriver & Jacobson. Charles "Rick" Rule, who will chair Cadwalader's antitrust practice from the firm's D.C. office, headed the DOJ's antitrust division under President Reagan and was a top lawyer for Microsoft in its antitrust battle with the feds. His recruitment is a coup for Cadwalader, which recently saw the defection of prior antitrust chair Steven Sunshine and two other partners to Skadden.

Law Firms Providing More Options for Retirement

Employees of law firms retire at about the same age as workers in other professions and, increasingly, have more options for planning retirement, according to an annual survey. The study found that retirement ages for the legal profession "remains anchored" at 65. Nearly half -- 47% -- of firms have mandatory retirements, generally between 67 and 70 years of age.

Supreme Court Refuses to Hear Sidley Austin Case

The U.S. Supreme Court has denied Sidley Austin's petition for writ of certiorari in the age discrimination suit being brought against the firm by the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. The firm, which is facing allegations it demoted 31 partners in 1999 on the basis of age, had argued for the suit's dismissal on the grounds the EEOC had no authority to seek monetary damages. But that motion was denied by both the Chicago district court hearing the case and the 7th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals.

Texas-based giant Vinson & Elkins has expanded its presence in the Middle East with the opening of a new office in Abu Dhabi. London energy partner Lewis Jones has transferred to Abu Dhabi to take on the role of administrative partner. The launch is thought to make V&E the first U.S. law firm to have offices in both Abu Dhabi and Dubai, the two most established legal hubs in the fast-growing Middle East market. The firm opened its Dubai office in 2003.

Sheppard, Mullin, Richter & Hampton has become the latest firm in California to match the New York scale for associate salaries. The 10-office, Los Angeles-based firm said first-years in California and Washington, D.C., will now earn $160,000. Also on Wednesday, Chicago-based Seyfarth Shaw announced an increase in its associate salary scale.
