Townsend Chooses Japan for Its First Overseas Office

Patent and trademark specialist Townsend and Townsend and Crew has expanded internationally for the first time, adding a Tokyo base to its six U.S. offices. Townsend Chairman James Gilliland says the firm is also setting its sights on other destinations in the region, including China. "We have a number of Asia-based clients who enjoy working with Townsend and would enjoy it even more if we had a physical presence there," he says.

Troutman Sanders Joins Bandwagon, Raises First-Years' Pay

Troutman Sanders raised associate pay $15,000 across the board in its Atlanta, Washington, Virginia and North Carolina offices Thursday, with the starting salary going to $145,000. The raises are effective Jan. 1, 2008, the same date the raise that Alston & Bird announced to its Atlanta associates last week goes into effect. Troutman Sanders made the first move in the round of associate pay increases that rippled through Atlanta in February, when the firm bumped starting pay from $115,000 to $125,000.

FTC Chair's Connection to Jones Day Scrutinized in Google Deal

A Washington public interest organization has filed a federal lawsuit asking the Federal Trade Commission to disclose records related to a possible conflict of interest in Jones Day's role in the Google-DoubleClick merger. The Electronic Privacy Information Center filed a Freedom of Information action asking the agency to turn over records as part of an effort to determine whether the chairman of the FTC, Deborah Platt Majoras, should have recused herself in Google-Doubleclick merger completed last year.

White & Case Strengthens Middle East Presence

White & Case has opened an office in Abu Dhabi and expanded its Riyadh office, raising the number of the firm's lawyers in the Middle East to more than 60. The Abu Dhabi office is the 36th for White & Case, which has more than 2,300 lawyers in 24 countries. The firm first established a presence in the Middle East more than 50 years ago.

McDermott Will, Dechert Kick Off New London Pay Push

A group of U.S. firms are gearing up for a round of London associate salary increases, with McDermott Will & Emery and Dechert the first to boost pay rates to keep up with London competition. McDermott Will has brought forward its raises, which were scheduled to take effect on Jan. 1, with newly qualified lawyer salaries jumping by 7 percent from $142,394 to $152,565. Meanwhile, Dechert has this month increased its newly qualified rates by around 10 percent to $128,154 to $147,479.

Panel Dismisses Former Computer Associates Accountants' Suit Against Kaye Scholer

A New York appellate panel has thrown out the legal malpractice suit initiated by three former Computer Associates accountants against the firm of Kaye Scholer. The three plaintiffs were fired during the accounting scandal that resulted in the securities fraud conviction of the company's then-chief executive. In their complaint, the plaintiffs asserted that Kaye Scholer's representation of them during the company's internal investigations resulted in their termination.

Nixon Peabody Opens Silicon Valley Office

Nixon Peabody is the latest firm to make a foray into Silicon Valley. The national firm announced Wednesday that it's opened a new office in Palo Alto, Calif., with five new lawyers led by corporate partner James Chapman, who helped found the Silicon Valley Law Group in 1995. Nixon Peabody's announcement follows Sonnenschein Nath & Rosenthal's decision to open a Silicon Valley office late last month.

Former Marsh General Counsel Joins O'Melveny

William L. Rosoff, the former general counsel of Marsh & McLennan Companies Inc., has joined O'Melveny & Myers as a senior partner. Rosoff was the chief lawyer for Marsh, the world's largest insurance brokerage firm, from October 2000 until November 2004, when he resigned in the wake of New York Attorney General Eliot Spitzer's civil suit charging the firm with rigging bids for insurance contracts and steering clients to insurers that paid it kickbacks.
