Skadden Builds in Asia With Shanghai Debut
Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom launches an office in Shanghai this week, with the relocation of corporate partner Gregory Miao, who previously split his time between Hong Kong and Beijing. The branch will focus on M&A, corporate and real estate, with Miao leading the corporate practice and Ed Sheremeta heading up its real estate division. The Shanghai location will be the law firm's fifth Asian office.Merger Creates India's Largest Law Firm
India's Fox Mandal and Little & Co. have merged to create the country's largest law firm. Fox Mandal Little boasts 250 attorneys, 38 of which are partners. The merged firm circumvented a restriction that normally limits Indian firms to just 20 partners by adopting a plan to create multiple partnerships depending on location. Fox Mandal was attracted to the 50-attorney Little & Co. because of its capital markets practice and strong Mumbai presence.Weil Gotshal Moves to End Legal Malpractice Suit
Weil, Gotshal & Manges has moved for summary judgment in a legal malpractice suit by a former bankruptcy client. The National Benevolent Association, one of the largest non-profits ever to file for bankruptcy, sued Weil Gotshal in 2005, claiming the firm pushed it into a "disastrous" Chapter 11 filing rather than exploring a negotiated settlement with creditors. In last week's motion, Weil Gotshal said the group's claims were based on "nothing more than speculation, conjecture and surmise."San Francisco-Based Sedgwick Opens Office in Austin
San Francisco-based Sedgwick, Detert, Moran & Arnold has moved into Austin, Texas, with a new office led by media/litigation lawyer Laura Lee Prather, whose clients include Fox Broadcasting and Court TV. Prather left Jackson Walker, where she had been a partner since 1998, to open the Sedgwick office on June 14. The Austin location is the 12th office for Sedgwick, which has 351 lawyers firmwide.Edwards Angell Adds Group From Nixon Peabody

Fried Frank and Proskauer Rose Show Financial Growth
Fried, Frank, Harris, Shriver & Jacobson and Proskauer Rose each showed impressive growth last year according to recently released financial results for 2005. Fried Frank's gross revenue rose to $390 million, and Proskauer Rose's fee income totaled $454 million. White supremacist Matthew Hale, who is serving a 40-year prison sentence for seeking to have U.S. District Judge Joan Humphrey Lefkow murdered, has filed a malpractice lawsuit against his former attorney. Hale is seeking $30 million in damages. He alleges that Thomas Durkin charged Hale's father legal fees for services that never were performed and claims that Durkin improperly excluded white jurors and worked to get blacks on the jury, which worked against his case.John Marshall Law Names New Library Director

Jones Day has appointed a new partner-in-charge of its New York office. Labor and employment lawyer Willis J. Goldsmith will head the firm's Manhattan office beginning Jan. 1, following in the footsteps of Dennis W. LaBarre, who has led the office since it opened in 1986.
