White & Case Elects New Chairman

White & Case has elected banking and project finance partner Hugh Verrier as its new chairman, succeeding managing partner Duane D. Wall, head of the 2,000-lawyer firm since 2000. Under a new governance structure adopted by the firm in May, Verrier will lead an executive committee consisting of himself and three other partners of his choosing. The firm will also have a partnership committee with eight elected members.

The hires come after the firm last week announced that it is to make its long-awaited London debut after hiring former O'Melveny & Myers London chief Matthew Hudson to head the operation.

Calif. Firm Hatches Out-of-State Merger

Having scoured California for a merger partner in the past year, Santa Barbara's Hatch & Parent finally had to go out of state for a taker. The 30-attorney firm found one in Brownstein Hyatt Farber Schreck, one of Denver's largest firms. Brownstein has grown from 110 lawyers and policy consultants in 2003 to about 185 this year. Hatch managing partner Robert Saperstein says he will continue to scout California for laterals and firms to help with expansion in Los Angeles and the San Francisco Bay Area.

Latham Unveils Middle East Plans With Three-Office Launch

Latham & Watkins has unveiled plans to open three new offices in the Persian Gulf as the top five U.S. firm finalizes its long-awaited Middle East launch. Latham is set to open in Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Doha in the next couple of months with partner Rindala Beydoun joining the firm to head the practice across the region. Latham hired corporate partner Beydoun from Vinson & Elkins to lead its Middle East push. Latham is now planning to bulk up the offices by transferring a number of partners and associates.

Weil Reports More Than $2 Million PEP; Milbank Doubles Growth Rate

Weil Gotshal reports it has broken the $2 million barrier for partner profits in 2007, while rival Milbank Tweed becomes the latest U.S. firm to post double-digit increases in both turnover and profitability. Profits per equity partner at Weil improved by 11 percent to reach $2.11 million, up from last year's figure of $1.9 million. Milbank, meanwhile, reports it more than doubled its 2006 growth rate to record an 18.8 percent surge in global fee income, from $540.8 million to $642.5 million.

Paul Hastings Janofsky & Walker has strengthened its Asia practice with the hire of three new partners in Japan and Hong Kong, the Los Angeles-based law firm announced Wednesday. The firm's Japanese base has both U.S. and local-law capability, having secured a merger with Tokyo firm Taiyo Law Office five years ago.
