New York Fed Taps Simpson Thacher on Bear Stearns Deal

Last week, as shareholders for Bear Stearns threatened action over JPMorgan's $2-per-share offer, the Federal Reserve Bank of New York called on Simpson Thacher & Bartlett to represent its interests, according to a source. Apparently Simpson's lawyers were brought on to represent the Fed in a role it disclosed in a statement Monday. Through an LLC set up just for this deal, "the New York Fed will take ... control of a portfolio of assets valued at $30 billion as of March 14, 2008," the statement read.

Lovells Announces Landmark Alliance With Nine Chinese Firms

Lovells has launched an alliance with nine independent Chinese law firms, the London firm announced Monday. The Sino-Global Legal Alliance will see lawyers from the participating firms working together in cross-firm practice groups. Lovells has previously worked with member firms in areas such as finance, dispute resolution and intellectual property. Lovells currently has offices in Beijing and Shanghai, but local regulation limits the work the firm can do in the region.

"Our revenues during 2005 were up 3 percent over the prior year," he says. "We have very strong practices within our firm."

German Firm Hengeler Heats Up European Pay War With New Salary Hike

Hengeler Mueller has raised its associate salaries for the second time in 18 months, as the elite German independent bids to keep pace with its foreign rivals. Junior lawyers at the firm saw their pay rise from �90,000 ($132,000) a year to either �100,000 ($146,500) or �105,000 ($154,000), depending on academic qualifications. Senior lawyers, meanwhile, will now receive �160,000 ($234,500) -- a rise of around seven percent from the previous mark of �150,000 ($220,000).

Haynes and Boone partners planned on Tuesday to tell the Dallas-based firm's Texas associates their salary scale will increase, retroactive to Aug. 1, to the new market rate of $160,000 for first-year associates. And for the first time, the firm's management has added individual billable-hour bonus goals into its computations. The raises follow announcements by other firms of increases for their Texas associates, most recently those at Baker Botts.
