Texas associates with Andrews Kurth will get a big, fat paycheck in mid-September because of a new pay scale retroactive to Aug. 1. Earlier this year, the firm announced raises for its first- and second-year associates while also saying it planned to study compensation for other associates. Now, the firm has announced a new salary scale that includes significant raises for third- through ninth-year associates. The American Bar Association is calling on law firms to abandon their mandatory retirement policies. In a vote Monday by the ABA's House of Delegates at its annual meeting, the 413,000-member organization took the official position of urging law firms that require their attorneys to retire at a certain age to rethink those policies. Proponents of the measure argued that law firms with such policies operate contrary to almost every other workplace where mandatory retirement violates age discrimination laws.Edwards Angell to Acquire London's Kendall Freeman
Boston-based Edwards Angell Palmer & Dodge has sealed a merger deal with London firm Kendall Freeman to forge a 600-lawyer transatlantic practice, it was announced Tuesday. Clifford Chance has elected London partner David Childs as its next global managing partner. Childs, 54, is expected to take over the firm's top management job May 1 and serve for four years. A federal judge has agreed to dismiss a class action case alleging that the makers of the BAR/BRI bar review course used deceptive ad materials to overcharge thousands of law school students preparing for the New York bar exam. Solo Robert Arleo had objected to a $49 million antitrust settlement in California with the same defendants, West Publishing and its parent company, Thomson Corp. Arleo's suit sought $48 million in damages and accused the companies of inducing consumers with fraudulent claims.Proskauer Adds Finance Partner to Paris Office
New York's Proskauer Rose has added Jean L'Homme, a banking and finance lawyer, to its Paris office. L'Homme, who joins as a partner, comes from the Paris office of London's Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer, where he was head of the firm's finance and regulatory/financial services group. He is the latest addition to the Paris office, which recently also welcomed a group of private equity lawyers. The firm has more than 750 lawyers worldwide.Norton Rose to Open Tokyo Office
Norton Rose is to boost its Asia reach with the opening of an office in Tokyo, the firm announced Wednesday. The office will be the firm's seventh in the region, but its first in Japan. In recent months, a number of U.K. firms have looked to beef up their presence in Japan, the world's second-largest economy.Former Partner's Discrimination Suit Against Duane Morris Proceeds
A discrimination and retaliation lawsuit filed by a former contract partner against Duane Morris has survived the law firm's motion to dismiss. U.S. District Judge Joan Lefkow, of the Northern District of Illinois, allowed to stand age and sex bias claims in an action brought by Gail Beesen-Dwars against the firm and David Yelin, managing partner of its Chicago office.
