DLA Piper Launches Latin American Firm Network

DLA Piper, which has 62 offices internationally but none in Central or South America, has launched a Latin America Initiative headed by two lawyers in its Dallas office. Partner Michael Santa Maria, who leads the effort with counsel Todd Bowers, says the initiative's key element is a network of "best-friend" firms in Latin America that will work closely with the 3,200-lawyer DLA Piper on work in the region.

Ex-Deputy AG McNulty Joins Baker & McKenzie

Former Deputy Attorney General Paul McNulty announced Monday that he has joined Baker & McKenzie as a partner in the firm's Washington, D.C., office. He will have a hand in the business crimes and investigations, corporate compliance and risk management, and global dispute resolution practices. McNulty testified before the Senate Judiciary Committee on the U.S. Attorney scandal, pointing out White House involvement. He resigned his post in May, citing "financial realities of college-age children."

Indicted Partner Resigns From Baker & McKenzie

Baker & McKenzie said Thursday that it had requested and received the resignation of indicted partner Martin Weisberg. Weisberg was indicted last week in the Eastern District of New York on charges that he participated with five other defendants in a stock-fraud scheme that netted two overseas short-sellers $55 million in illegal profits. He has pleaded not guilty.

Clifford Chance has come out as the first U.K. firm to hand out a one-off bonus to U.S. associates, as the New York pay war gathers steam. Clifford Chance's regional managing partner for the Americas told the firm's New York-based associates Wednesday they would receive a special bonus ranging from $10,000 for first-years to $50,000 for senior associates. The news follows the Magic Circle's firm axing of a six-lawyer structured finance team from its New York office earlier this week.

Bail Denied for Lawyer Charged With Paying Underaged Girls for Sex

A Manhattan judge refused to set bail last week for a lawyer who fled to Canada after being accused of paying underaged girls for sex. James Colliton was later captured in an East Village hotel. Judge Daniel FitzGerald stated he would not risk freeing someone who had already tried to flee. Colliton, a lawyer formerly with Manhattan firm Cravath, Swaine & Moore, has pleaded not guilty to a 43-count indictment involving allegations he had sex with three underaged girls, including two sisters.

D.C. Bar Program Matches Older Attorneys With Pro Bono Work

The D.C Bar Pro Bono Program met last month with Washington, D.C.-area managing partners to promote its Senior Lawyer Public Interest Project, which aims to get older attorneys more involved with pro bono. The D.C. Bar will do the matchmaking and find the right pro bono client or case for a lawyer interested in spending more time on nonbillable hours. "The baby-boom generation is reaching retirement age, and many aren't ready to quit," says consultant James Jones.
