Gay Bar President Resigns Over Comments on Discrimination Suit Against Sullivan & Cromwell

The president of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Transgender Law Association has resigned over comments he made to the press about a Sullivan & Cromwell associate's sexual-orientation discrimination suit against the firm. John Scheich, then-LeGal's vice president, told ABC News the firm had been a strong supporter of gay lawyers and said: "I don't know Aaron Charney or the details of his case, but if I had to line up on one side or the other, I would have to line up with ... Sullivan Cromwell."

London Corporate Head Stuns Hogan & Hartson by Opting to Leave Law

Hogan & Hartson is to lose the head of its London corporate team, Jonathan Coppin, after less than 18 months with the firm. Coppin, who joined Hogan last summer from the London arm of rival Shearman & Sterling, told partners of his decision to leave the firm -- and the law -- last month. Meanwhile, part-time employment specialist Nicola Walker -- the firm's only employment partner in London -- has retired from private practice to focus on her work with a London employment tribunal.

Freshfields' Profits Jump 25 Percent per Partner

Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer is the latest U.K. firm to reap outstanding results for the financial year ending April 30, with a 25 percent increase in profits per equity partner. The firm's PPP now stands at just more than $2 million, and revenues grew by 12 percent from last year. Freshfields' results are the latest indication that the Magic Circle firms are enjoying their most profitable period since the dot-com boom of the late 1990s.

More Law Firms Announce Bonus Intentions

More law firms have said they will give associates a "special" one-time bonus in addition to the traditional year-end bonus. Shearman & Sterling and Fried, Frank, Harris, Shriver & Jacobson say their special bonuses will range from $10,000 to $50,000, while class-year bonuses will range from $35,000 to $65,000. Cravath, Swaine & Moore was the first firm to announce its bonus plan, saying it would pay associates the two bonuses totaling $45,000 for first-years and going up to $110,000 for senior associates.

9th Circuit Decides Trademark Surf-Off

Foley & Lardner's legal work representing women's clothing manufacturer Kymsta could affect surfer style. The case, which likely will go on to another trial, involves a trademark battle between surfwear company Quiksilver's popular brand, Roxy, and Kymsta's Roxywear label. Foley's James Nguyen said the case could impact future trademark cases in the apparel industry since many brands work with a dominant "house mark," or main line, but launch other lines.

After flirtations that started last year, Appleby Spurling Hunter and Bailhache Labesse have agreed to join forces in a merger. The combined firm will be called Appleby Hunter Bailhache and will be merged Sept. 1, according to the firms. Bermuda-based Appleby is a provider of offshore legal services with offices in the Cayman Islands, the British Virgin Islands, Hong Kong and London.
