Arent Fox: Don't Call Us a 'Lifestyle' Firm

For years, Arent Fox embraced its image as a "lifestyle" firm, a concept popular with young associates. But now, the Washington, D.C., shop has reversed course. At a partnership retreat last month, Chairman Marc Fleischaker issued a directive to partners to cease using the terminology. The problem, Fleischaker says, is one of perception: "The implication is that you don't have to work hard. We do work hard and we make a lot of money, so I don't want people to misconstrue who we are."

Heller Hires DLA's Seddon for Asian Top Role

Heller Ehrman has bagged a new managing partner for its Asia offices with the hire of former DLA Piper Asia chief Nick Seddon. Set to join the firm early in the summer, Seddon will head up Heller's four-office Asian network. He replaces current Asia chief Jonathan Palmer, who is returning to the U.S. after three years at the helm. At DLA Piper, Seddon acted as Asia head between 2004 and 2007, during which time he oversaw significant growth for the firm in the region, including opening two new offices.

Bingham McCutchen's Orange County, Calif., office is expanding its land use and development practice group with the addition of partner Geoffrey Willis and four other attorneys from Sedgwick, Detert, Moran & Arnold. Linklaters Hires for Amsterdam Insolvency Launch

Linklaters has launched a restructuring and insolvency practice in Amsterdam after hiring a senior lawyer from U.K. rival Simmons & Simmons. Paul Kuipers joins the Dutch arm of the Magic Circle firm Tuesday as a counsel. Kuipers was previously a partner at Simmons, where he specialized in corporate recovery work and debt restructuring, advising banks, creditors and debtors. The move comes as a number of major firms are looking to boost their insolvency practices ahead of an anticipated economic downturn.

ABA Retains Standard on Judicial Conduct

The American Bar Association's House of Delegates approved language Monday that will keep the Model Code of Judicial Conduct's bar against judges' engaging in impropriety or the appearance of impropriety as an enforceable rule. The vote came after a special committee reversed itself on the controversial issue. An earlier proposal had sought to downgrade the provision.

Thelen Lawyer Helped by U.N. as a Child Heads to The Hague

Thelen Reid associate Hanh Nguyen is taking a leave of absence so she can work for the United Nations in The Hague. Starting in March, she will report to a senior prosecutor at the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia as an assistant legal officer. Nguyen says she expects a fair share of grunt work, a lot of legal research, writing motions and maybe a role in court. A stint at a U.N.-run refugee camp when Nguyen was 11 left her with "a very favorable view" of the United Nations.
