O'Melveny Rainmaker Fernandez Takes Latin America Group to Latham
The New York office of Latham & Watkins has recruited a six-lawyer Latin America practice from West Coast rival O'Melveny & Myers. The group is led by corporate partner Jose W. Fernandez, who specializes in representing corporations and financial institutions undertaking transactions in Latin America and has been involved in many of the region's largest deals. Steven Farber, founding partner and president of Brownstein Hyatt, says that after doing business in Las Vegas for some years, the firm was eager to expand there.Clifford Chance Reports $1.9 Billion Revenue
British legal giant Clifford Chance announced on Tuesday estimated revenue of $1.9 billion and profits per partner of $1.5 million for the fiscal year ended April 30, up a respective 13 percent and 24 percent from the year before. The London-based firm, which is not included in the annual Am Law 100 survey of The American Lawyer magazine, has 268 of its 2,500 lawyers in New York.Fried Frank Litigation Partner Joins Milberg Weiss
Embattled class action firm Milberg Weiss Bershad & Schulman has brought aboard a new senior partner. Matthew Gluck joins the firm from Fried, Frank, Harris, Shriver & Jacobson, where he had been a litigation partner since 1973 but was facing mandatory retirement. Catherine Sun, the Weil, Gotshal & Manges lawyer that Foley & Lardner lured away to head its future Shanghai office, may be on maternity leave, but she's raring to get started as the chairwoman of Foley's Asia practice. A group of 92 large law firms wrote the IRS on Tuesday, requesting a one-year extension on compliance with �409A, which was intended to eliminate abuses associated with executive deferred compensation plans.
