Akin Gump Bumps Associate, Counsel Pay in Texas

Associates and counsel at Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld's Texas offices are getting a raise. First-year associates will earn a base salary of $135,000, plus a $5,000 guaranteed bonus. Partner Daniel Micciche says Akin Gump will still award yearly merit-based bonuses, which range up to $50,000 and are based on more factors than other firms' "mechanical system based on billable hours." Earlier this year, Akin Gump hiked salary scales for associates and counsel in California, New York and Washington, D.C.

Ex-Sullivan Associate Moves to Dismiss Firm's Suit

Former Sullivan & Cromwell associate Aaron Charney has moved to dismiss the firm's suit against him for disclosing client and firm confidences, arguing that most of the alleged confidences had already been made public by the firm. The firm had sued Charney in response to his own suit, which alleged he had been subject to discrimination by partners on the basis of sexual orientation. In its suit, the firm claimed Charney improperly disclosed confidential information in his complaint and in media interviews.

Recent Survey Shows Litigation on the Rise for U.S. Companies

According to Fulbright & Jaworski's third annual survey of litigation trends, the average U.S. company faced 305 suits worldwide, and spent more than 70 percent of its overall legal budget on litigation. Also, nearly two-thirds of U.S. companies that participated in the survey hired outside counsel to conduct an internal investigation. The report, made public on Tuesday, includes information provided by in-house lawyers at 422 companies worldwide.

Thacher Proffitt Warns Associates of Looming Layoffs

Thacher Proffitt & Wood informed about 50 associates Tuesday that their futures at the firm were uncertain because of the collapse of the market for mortgage-backed securities, an area where the firm had had a leading practice. Among those impacted by the warning were 24 non-first-year associates who were told they were almost certain to be laid off in January unless the credit market substantially improved. Also, 29 first-years were offered the option of taking four months' severance and leaving the firm.

Holland & Knight has endowed a scholarship for second-year students at Florida A&M University's law school that will cover full tuition and guarantee the recipient a summer associate position with the firm. "We hope this will give us a broader pool of lawyers to choose from to meet our goal in having a diverse law firm," partner Martha Barnett said.
