WASHINGTON – Verizon Wireless and Sprint Corp. will pay a combined $158 million for illegally billing mobile phone customers for unauthorized third-party charges, federal and state authorities announced Tuesday.

“It’s both unfair and illegal to charge consumers for services they did not request, a practice that Sprint and Verizon engaged in over several years,” New York State Attorney General Eric Schneiderman said in a statement. “Under today’s settlement, an estimated two million New Yorkers will be eligible for refunds and both companies have committed to ending this deceptive business practice.”
