The Brennan Center for Justice is the lead plaintiff in a suit filed Tuesday to force the state to set new limits on contributions by limited liability corporations (LLCs).

The suit, Brennan Center for Justice at NYU School of Law v. New York State Board of Elections, seeks through court intervention what it tried unsuccessfully to do earlier this year: have the Board of Elections eliminate a so-called “loophole” in rules covering LLC contributions.

One example of the loophole are that LLCs are allowed to contribute up to $60,800 per statewide candidate in each election cycle while corporations are limited to a $5,000 donation per candidate in the same period, the plaintiffs said in their suit filed in Albany Supreme Court.
