Prosecutors on Monday told a jury that a former Bryan Cave lawyer repeatedly lied to lenders in the hopes of obtaining millions of dollars to finance the purchase of Maxim magazine, then lied to his law firm about his client and the deal.

“This is a case of greed and lies by a corrupt attorney,” Assistant U.S. Attorney Andrew Adams said.

But defense counsel for the former Bryan Cave lawyer, Harvey Newkirk, argued that his client was the victim of a fraud perpetuated by a “world-class con man.”
