Federal prosecutors in Manhattan rested their criminal case Wednesday against former Assembly speaker Sheldon Silver after jurors listened to testimony about how Silver invested his alleged crime proceeds.

Silver's defense team may put some documents before the jury when it returns on Monday but is not expected to call any witnesses. The prosecution and the defense will then deliver closing remarks.

Following opening statements on Nov. 3, the Southern District U.S. Attorney's Office has called multiple witnesses and showed jurors emails, checks and business records to illustrate its argument that Silver received kickbacks disguised as attorney referral fees from two New York law firms.
