Authorities have charged a former employee of the Staten Island District Attorney's office with stealing more than $50,000 from the agency and spending it on personal purchases.

The Richmond County District Attorney's Office said William Nelson, 43, of Staten Island, was charged Tuesday with using the agency's credit cards over an 11-year period for travel expenses, sporting events, memorabilia, comics, video games, survival gear and other merchandise.

He was arraigned Tuesday before Criminal Court Judge Raymond Rodriguez and released on a $100,000 bond. His next court date was set for Aug. 3.
