More than 100 jurists and friends celebrated the life of white-collar defense attorney Gus Newman, who died on May 1 at age 90. Fellow defense lawyers and former prosecutors shared stories of the Brooklyn-born Newman's talent in the courtroom, generosity as a mentor and—in one case—a brief moment as a police detainee at John F. Kennedy Airport while attempting to test the government's evidence against a client.
One former client, Rev. Floyd Flake, right, a former U.S. Representative from Queens whose 1991 federal fraud and embezzlement case was dropped by the government, spoke about Newman's tenacity. “Gus Newman never quit,” he said. “We will never forget him because he has done marvellous work for us, all of us, every one of us.”
The event was sponsored by The New York Council of Defense Lawyers, of which Newman was a founding member, and was held at the New York City Bar Association on Wednesday.
