Eversheds Sutherland has started a relief fund to help U.S. employees and their families recover from natural disasters, injury, illness or personal tragedies.

The idea was suggested by Aileen Bleach, U.S. pro bono and corporate responsibility manager, after employees in the New York office held fundraising campaigns for two secretaries in the aftermath of a fatal accident and a tragic fire. In Houston, meanwhile, employees were dealing with the devastation of Hurricane Harvey.

“We have always come together to help each other in times of crisis. This fund takes the existing generosity of our people and makes the process more efficient,” Bleach said.

Robert Owen, a partner in the New York office, said the fund has already helped one employee who became homeless. The firm supports the fund but employees and partners also may contribute through a payroll deduction.

“Our people are our most important resource,” said Mark Wasserman, co-CEO of the firm, in a statement. “Established in response to the desire of employees wanting to help their colleagues during hurricanes, fires and other recent disasters, the fact that support is provided, in part, from co-workers makes it even more meaningful.”
