Contradicting recent media reports that he may join the president's legal team, Marc Mukasey said he is remaining at his law firm, Greenberg Traurig, where he has an active white-collar defense practice in New York.

“There's nobody better than Rudy and Jay and Emmet to handle this investigation and bring it to a swift and successful end. I love them,” he said in a statement, referring to his longtime partner Rudy Giuliani—on a leave of absence from Greenberg while on President Donald Trump's legal team—and to Trump lawyers Jay Sekulow and Emmet Flood. “I will remain at Greenberg Traurig, committed to my clients and my partners and my practice,” Mukasey added.

The firm confirmed Thursday that Giuliani remains on a leave of absence, despite no longer promoting on its website a profile of Guiliani. Meanwhile, Greenberg said Mukasey “remains a shareholder in good standing at the firm.”

The New York Times reported on April 25 that Mukasey was likely to join the legal team. A CNN report late Wednesday said Mukasey was in talks to join the team, but a final decision had not been made.

Giuliani, who became a Greenberg shareholder in early 2016, took a leave of absence from the firm on April 19 when he came on board the president's legal team in the investigation of special counsel Robert Mueller.

Mukasey, in contrast, has maintained an active litigation practice at the firm. On April 25 he secured the acquittal of former UBS AG trader Andre Flotron, whom the U.S. Attorney in Connecticut had charged with conspiring to commit commodities fraud by manipulating prices of futures contracts for gold, silver and metals. It was a second win for the client, after a judge in February threw out other counts against Flotron. Mukasey and shareholder Nathan Muyskens led the client's trial team.

Court records show Mukasey also represents Jordan Fogel, a former hedge fund partner and analysts who pleaded guilty as part of an insider trading scheme and is cooperating with the government. Fogel has recently testified at trial as part of his cooperation.

Giuliani joined Trump's team right before a shakeup this week, in which Ty Cobb left and Flood joined, leaving Williams & Connolly. The team also includes Sekulow and Jane and Marty Raskin, after John Dowd resigned in March.

Mukasey is a longtime law partner to Giuliani. The pair formerly practiced together at Bracewell, before moving together to Greenberg in 2016. Mukasey had been mentioned as a potential candidate for the U.S. Attorney position in the Southern District of New York, before Geoffrey Berman, another former Greenberg shareholder, was selected.

Giuliani, even while representing the president in the Mueller investigation, has continued television interviews, including on Wednesday night when he announced on Fox News that President Trump had reimbursed Michael Cohen for the payment to adult actress Stephanie Clifford, known as Stormy Daniels. That announcement set off a wave of commentary, including after Trump confirmed in Twitter posts early Thursday that he paid Cohen a “reimbursement,” in arguing there was no campaign finance violation.
