A lawyer has pleaded guilty to stealing $600,000 from a Harlem church that he represented in a real estate transaction. Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus R. Vance Jr. said Friday that John Shasanmi, 39, of Wilmington, Delaware, put money from the Second Providence Baptist Church into his personal account, instead of in escrow. Prosecutors say he also mailed the pastor a forged bank statement.

Shasanmi pleaded guilty to two counts of second-degree grand larceny and one count of third-degree criminal possession of a forged instrument in relation to his handling of escrow funds that were to go to the church. He is expected to be sentenced March 1.

In past years, Shasanmi worked in Big Law as a Pepper Hamilton associate and in a role at Dewey & LeBoeuf and DuPont. He was admitted to the state bar in 2006, and as of July he lived in Delaware. Last year Shasanmi submitted his resignation from the bar, affirmed by the First Department panel decision, issued Nov. 15.
