As Democrats in Congress move forward with their impeachment inquiry against President Donald Trump, the New York State Bar Association is hosting a free event next week on the legal process of impeachment featuring prominent constitutional law expert Cass Sunstein.
The event will be held at the Fordham University School of Law from 6 to 7 p.m. Oct. 15, according to the State Bar, and will be a Continuing Legal Education event.
The event will also be open for anyone else who wants to attend, the State Bar said.
Hank Greenberg, the current president of the State Bar Association and a shareholder at Greenberg Traurig, said the event will serve as a resource not only to attorneys, but to lawmakers and members of the public.
"The State Bar seeks to educate the profession, the public and policymakers on important issues in the law and government," Greenberg said. "Cass Sunstein is nationally recognized as one of the preeminent experts on the impeachment process."
Sunstein, a widely recognized expert in matters of constitutional law, has published several articles and books related to the topic, including "Impeachment: A Citizen's Guide" in 2017. He's currently the Robert Walmsley university professor at Harvard University.
Matthew Diller, dean of Fordham University School of Law, said Sunsein is uniquely situated to talk about the legal process and ramifications of the impeachment process as one of the leading scholars in that area of law.
"As we all follow the impeachment inquiry in the House of Representatives, it is important that we understand this rarely used, but critically important feature of our constitutional structure," Diller said.
Aside from his published works regarding impeachment, Sunstein also worked as an attorney-adviser in the Office of Legal Counsel of the U.S. Department of Justice. During the first term of the Obama Administration, he was the administrator of the White House Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs.
The event is co-sponsored by both the Fordham University School of Law and the New York State Writers Institute at the University at Albany.
It will be held in the Constantino Room on the 2nd floor of Fordham Law School, and open to both attorneys and the public. The event will also be livestreamed.
Individuals who want to register for the event can visit the State Bar Association's website: www.nysba.org/ImpeachmentCLE.
