More than two years after they applied for asylum in the United States, five transgender Staten Island residents filed for a writ of mandamus in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of New York in an attempt to get their asylum applications heard.

The women, who came to the United States from Mexico, all applied for asylum in 2016 or 2017 on the grounds that they will be persecuted for their gender identity in Mexico, according to the complaint.
